How to Bleed a Floor Jack Correctly

How to Bleed a Floor Jack

You’ll need to get tools such as a flat-head screwdriver and hydraulic fluid intact to bleed your jack successfully.

Once the two tools are ready, follow the steps below to bleed your floor jack.

1. Clean and Set up the Floor Jack

The first step in bleeding a floor Jack is making sure the jack is placed on a smooth surface and thoroughly cleaned of all grease and oil particles.

This can be done with a moist cloth and would help remove dirt when the floor jack is opened.

Also, detach the floor jack from the engine hoist and other attachments before you initiate the bleeding process.

2. Stretch the Ram Piston

Next, stretch the ram piston directly below the object and start pumping the floor jack.

Continue increasing the jack until it reaches the arms point, where it can’t go any further.

3. Open the Pressure Valve

Open the pressure valve to release pressure in the floor jack. In modern jacks, pressure can be removed by gently turning the handle counterclockwise, while pressure calves in older jacks are under the handle.

While in some cases, you can use pliers to rotate the pressure valve until they’re released.

4. Open the Filler Plug

This is the step where you make use of the flat-head screwdriver. Locate the filler plug and turn it in an anti-clockwise direction with the screwdriver until you hear a hissing sound.

This sound is often an indication that trapped air has started to escape.

The check valves and the filler plug often look alike, so consult your jack’s manual for directions.

5. Close the Release Valve

Once the air has stopped coming out of the jack, reinstate the filler plug and tighten the release valve by turning it clockwise.

You should also check if the floor jack is short of hydraulic fluid and top it up if it’s not until it becomes full.

6. Repeat steps 4 – 5

After reinstating the filler plug, remove it to eliminate the air in the floor jack. You can continue this process until there’s no more air in the jack system.

You can now pump the jack and see if it works like a new one.
